character :: Marshall

There is no greater delusion
or disorder that mankind has
ever discovered than that of hope.

Marshall had a good life. As an upper middle class seventeen year old high school student living in Washington, Marshall couldn't have asked for more than a little privacy from his parents and a nice, comfortable hoodie to keep him warm all year round. Looking back, it was true...Marshall had a good life and then in a single moment, everything changed. While beneath the basement floor of his house, Marshall listened as a massive explosion shattered his perfect world and left only death and despair in it's wake.

A nuclear explosion.

When Marshall crawls out of safety and back into the world he once knew, nothing is the same and life itself has become a struggle. Buildings reduced to rubble, dead bodies litter the streets and desperation has caused people to revert back to their animalistic selves, killing one another for food, shelter - anything they can lay claim to. And Marshall? He's just a shell of his former self, looking for any possible way to survive the chaos he's just lived through. Before he knows it, starvation sets in and Marshall does the only thing he knows for sure will keep him alive before he hears something. A rumor that spreads like radiation: well-stocked, fully-prepped shuttles are taking in survivors from Florida, launching them into Earth's orbit where they can repopulate and come to terms with Earth's annihilation. Marshall knows it's a slim chance and with over 5000 miles to walk and his bloodlust growing stronger by the day, the trek seems nearly impossible until an optimistic hippie companion persuades him with promises of hope. With each miserable step he takes, Marshall can only hope that the rumors were true.
