The Guide to the Right Path
Farrah and Harijah were two of three daughters born to Mu'nisah and Gamal Kachadoorian in Baghdad, Iraq, along with their sister youngest sister, Badra. Gamal worked at the water treatment plant for many hours whereas Mu'nisah worked as a schoolteacher in hopes to provide a more comfortable life for their daughters, despite the continued war with the United States making life even more difficult. Farrah was the most intelligent and kind of the three sisters and the middle child at that - not that Farrah ever complained. She loved her sisters dearly and would do anything for them, even if she herself would get in trouble for their actions. More than once, she took the blame when the girls went out to play keep away with various traveler's things and were brought back to their father with the traveler's complaints. Despite his daughter's mischievous ways, Gamal was a very proud father who wanted nothing more than his daughter's happiness and to see them wed one day. Unfortunately for him, such a day would never come; at the age of 30, Gamal becomes ill and passes away, leaving only Mu'nisah to care for their daughters.
Farrah was saddened by her father's death but she stayed as strong as she could for her sisters, especially Hajirah who seemed to take the news the hardest. It was painful for Farrah herself but any mourning for her father, she did in private. As the money troubles began to add up and their mother struggled to keep things afloat without their father, Farrah did what she could to keep costs down. She wore clothes from donation bins, did small jobs around town such as sweeping their stores and washing dishes or even running errands in exchange for food, none of which even seemed to make a dent in the financial struggle they found themselves in. As the money dries up, Mu'nisah becomes desperate to provide the basics for her family and resorts to shameful methods to do this: by having Farrah, Hajirah and Badra beg on the streets while she's at work.
Farrah and Badra did as they were told, begging for anything that they could get from total strangers. Luckily for the girls, their kindness and cuteness attracted many who were willing to give to them: clothes, food and even small amounts of money. It was hard work but Farrah was unafraid of doing what had to be done in order to help their mother. With such a positive outlook, Farrah went to 'work' each and every day, a smile on her face while worrying about her sister, Hajirah, who was nowhere in sight when the begging was to be done.
As the years passed, the family was able to stay afloat in various ways, though their way of living was minimalist and by the time Farrah's oldest sister Hajirah turned 18, she could already see her eagerness to get married which Farrah supported. The two would spend many hours discussing the men around Baghdad, wedding attire, the food that would be served at Hajirah's wedding and even the kind of life that Hajirah hoped to live after she became a wife and before anyone even knew it, there was a suitor at the door. He spoke highly of the beautiful woman that he hoped to take as his bride but when Hajirah realized the woman that he was speaking about was Farrah, rather than herself, she was furious, much to Farrah's dismay. Mu'nisah declined to allow Farrah to marry at such a young age [only 15] and Farrah declined as well, hoping that he would settle instead on Hajirah to curb her anger. But the man declined and stated that he would be back for Farrah one day.
Only a few months later, Hajirah did meet her husband, a man named Hameed who Farrah's mother explained would 'treat her well' and Farrah was delighted! She planned everything with her sister about the wedding and stood at her wedding and honored guest. Farrah missed Hajirah once she had gone off to live with her new husband but kept herself busy by getting a job as an assistant to a tailor and helping her mother with the home/bills until she herself turned 18. Only a few months after her 18th birthday, there is a knock on the door and once again, the man who had been seeking Farrah's hand before has returned. Farrah, unlike Hajirah, isn't so quick to jump into a marriage and requests a number of outings where the two can get to know one another. Almost a year of courtship later and Farrah agrees to marry Qasim and the two have a small private wedding with a guest list that includes their family members and very close friends.
The first two years of their marriage are incredible and Farrah couldn't be happier. During this time, she gives birth to her two precious sons, Talal and Siddiq while Qasim works hard as a contractor for a small building company. But the happiness is soon dashed when a air strike sent by the U.S hits Qasim's place of work and he, and several of his workers, are killed in the blast. Farrah is shocked, devastated and broken by this news but cannot allow it to show, what with being a mother and all. Instead, she mourns heavily in private and in the face of others, even her own mother and sisters, puts on a brave face.
Three weeks pass and Farrah is unsuccessful in finding a job that is looking to hire anyone, much less a woman and soon, she finds herself in a situation like her mother...broke and struggling to provide for her children. But Hajirah and her husband Hameed step in to offer her [and the children] a home. Farrah, still heartbroken, accepts and lives under Hameed's gracious care along with several other women and many other children, that Talal and Siddiq come to befriend later on.
After speaking with her sister Hajirah, as well as the two other women that Hameed had taken in, Farrah seeks Hameed as her next husband, in order to provide her children with a proper father figure. Hameed also agrees though their relationship remains platonic. It's at this time that she notices Hajirah beginning to act strangely around her but Farrah can't understand why and she doesn't have time to find out before the Middle East erupts in a firestorm of bombs, courtesy of the U.S and their war. After being moved to a safe shelter by Hameed, Farrah and her family must wait to see what will become of their old life.
Farrah is a kind, loving person who wants nothing more than a happy family and a comfortable place to raise her children. She still feels a lot of anguish from losing her husband but finds comfort in Dunya and Anjum, Hameed's other two wives, one of which was a divorcee while the other was a widow herself. Farrah confides in the two women regularly [and Hajirah, when she'll listen] about her feelings and through them, she receives a lot of strength. She loves Hameed as well and appreciates being taken into his home though she is certain it'll take time to warm up to him and lay her husband's memory to rest.
As a fighter, Farrah isn't very strong but her biggest strength is her words: she has the ability to inspire, which just may prove useful as time goes on.
