character :: Mohammad Safar

Mohammad is from Hezar Mani, Iran, and is detained before the bombs are initially dropped. As an able-bodied young man, he accepted an ultimatum: instead of being killed on the spot, he agreed to labor for his captors on the promise he could someday return home. His eyes were always peeled for escape, and the moment he were unearthed into the wasteland above the prison bunker in order to do manual labor: he made a run for it. This run will cost him his ear, his eye, and much of the movement in his right arm: but if you’d ask him now, he’d say he’d run again.

The entire right side of his exposed body made direct contact with caustic gas suspended in the air. At the end of his brief flight, he finds himself at the mercy of other badly burned refugees taken in by a kind woman – and while her healing balms and ointments bring him some comfort, they run low. He goes on the hunt for his fellow survivors after only two days, unphased by their offers of sanctuary. By the time insurgent forces find the group of hidden victims and the massacre begins anew, Mohammad is gone - and now with nothing to return to, he braves the toxic straightline winds once more. He considers his survival a gift from God, and when he finds a metal building surrounded by bloodied camouflage – he considers the Mad Devil inside a gift as well.

There’s only two ways this can end for Mohammad, or so he says; either he lives or dies as the shield to his sword, a faithful servant to the man who steals away his heart.
